Duncan
Duncan arrived as a stray on 22nd April. He is lovely, friendly 5 year 8 month old Staffordshire bull terrier crossed with a French bulldog. As you would expect he is quite small and weighs 16.3 kilos.
Duncan did not arrive in the best condition, suffering from a cherry eye, some fur loss on his back and very long nails. We will have the cherry eye corrected in early May, and we have put him on a sensitive diet to help his skin and fur.
The sort of home for Duncan
-
No dogs currently in the home
-
No cats in the home
-
No children under the age of 10 years
-
Access to his own private and secure garden (not shared or communal)
-
A reasonably active home, with lots of play
Things to consider
-
We do not know if he is house trained, although given his age we would like to think that he is, and he has been spotless in his kennel.
-
We do not know if he is used to being left alone, and you may have to train him to get him used being left, up to a maximum of four hours.
Handling
A very friendly little dog from the moment he arrived. He was happy to meet each of our team, happily sharing his love. He was no problem being fitted with a new collar, and one of our temporary harnesses.
He has shown no aggression, dominance or fear in any of our interactions with him, and he takes treats gently. He may mouth a little when he is very excited.
Walks
Due to his long nails, we do not think Duncan was walked much, or at least not very much recently. His pads are also quite soft so we started him off with two 20-minute walks per day, and this increased to two 30-minute walks a day from 30th April 2026.
On his walks with us he has pulled, though walkers vary in how much he pulls with some saying minimal, and some saying a lot, and he is a brisk walker as well. But everyone seems to agree that due to his size it is manageable pulling. Some of our walkers have noted he slows down further into the walk.
He has so far ignored dogs on walks, even dogs that have had a growl at him, Duncan has ignored those too. Happy to do his toilet business on walks. He does not appear bothered by passing traffic.
Play
Duncan will play with pretty much anything. Seems to prefer anything that squeaks, but was also very happy to play tug. He has allowed us to hold toys while he is holding them, and to take toys from him, and he has not tried snatching toys back.
He may try and instigate very playful play fighting, which can involve some soft mouthing which some people/children may not like. No issues for us when we tidy toys away.
Health
Duncan arrived with a cherry eye. We have already booked him in for surgery on 5th May, but he can be viewed before then. He arrived with thinning hair on his back, so we have treated him for fleas and worms, and put him on to a sensitive dry food diet with some salmon oil to hopefully improve this. His nails are long, but they should wear down with exercise.
Duncan saw our vet on 27th April and our vet has no concerns, and believes his fur will improve with the improved diet. He has now had his 1st restart and Kennel Cough vaccines.
Although it is rare, sometimes dogs from other kennels arrive with Kennel Cough, though all our dogs are vaccinated against Kennel Cough at the earliest opportunity they may already be incubating this illness when they arrive/are adopted as the incubation period can be up to 14 days.
Please be aware that the profiles of new dogs can change as we get to know about the dogs the longer, they stay with us.
The adoption contribution is £250.00.
If you adopt a dog from Happy Staffie Rescue you could be entitled to five weeks free pet insurance through Agria (terms and conditions apply).
